A new season begins!!

November 6, 2013

The 2013 -14 Swimming & Diving competition season began last Saturday Nov 2 with the Smith Relays.  Smith , Tufts and Westfield State University competed in the all relay format meet.  Being a relay meet, “official best times” are hard to come by unless on eleads off a relay, we had excellent swims overall and 5 lifetime best times/splits.

In the 200 Medley Relay Smith posted times of 1:58.40 and 2:04.25 to get the meet underway.  Erika Schroeder has  good lead off backstroke leg at 30.46 and Olivia Bannon split a 32.71 in breaststroke, the second fastest br split of the event.  Grace Lee split a 26.47 in the free leg of the relay showing that her goal of getting to 25low in the 50 is an achievable goal for this season.  Alyssa Pascuzzo also split well in fly and swam good 100 fly legs in the fly relay and the 400 Medley.  Alyssa hopes to sub 60 in fly by December. Laura Nunnelly in the Smith B relay also had a good backstroke split showing good speed for the 200 backstroke specialist who is working toward huge time drops in both the 100 and 200 backs this season.  MIchaela Stamm, Eliza Cummings and MargaretAnne Smith, first year swimmers on the team, all had good relays splits as well representing good time drops for each swimmer. In the 3 x 100 backstroke relay Erika, Laura and Abby Onos all recorded excellent splits with Erika going 1:05.82 for lifetime best.  The 3 x 100 breaststroke event showed some of the great potential in breaststroke events with 6 good splits and Michaela again recording  a best time for her split.  Olivia had a 1:10.88 split which is 4 seconds faster than last year at this time.  Likewise Hannah Francis also had a split of 1:16.20 which is 3 seconds faster.

Jill Anderson, senior, had  200 free split in the 800 free relay that was just one second slower than her lifetime best in that event.   Carolyn Taylor and Emily Lane had good swims in the crescendo relay in which they swam the 500 free leg of that relay.  While very tired from training and the 4 previous events, each swam well and should be on target for going under 5:20 in the 500 free this year.

Paige Christie, aiming to become the next Smith College swimmer to sucessfully swim the English Channel (this summer!!), swam good fly and free legs of relays as did Hayley Bezubka and Erin Walch in their events.

In the diving events, CeCe Arrison performed some new dives in her optional  list and scored 214.20 on 1 m and 228.80 on 3 m. and is aiming to make NCAA qualifying scores this fall.  Vanessa McFarlane, after training hard over the summer. dove well using a combination of new dives and old dives, doing both vols and opts.  Anna Partridge, in her first diving meet, dove very well as well scoring just behind some very experienced divers. Sophia Ladner and Malayna Hocker both competed on 1 m.  Sophia competed a 403c and a 5223d for the first time!!
