Smith Falls in Tight Meet Against Mount Holyoke

The Wild Bunch Cheers on Mack-Attack's 200 Fly at 7 Sisters

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass.–Mackenzie Bradley won three events, setting season bests in all, but the Smith College swimming and diving team fell to Mt. Holyoke College 156-144 on Saturday in their penultimate meet of the season.

Bradley touched the wall first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:25.13), the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:06.16) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:22.92), setting bests in all, including a seven second improvement in the 1000-yard freestyle.  She also beat her previous marks in the 500 by nearly three full seconds, and in the 200 fly by 5.90 seconds.

As has been the case in recent weeks, Smith dominated the diving events, taking the top four places in the 1-meter dive, and four of the top five in the 3-meter dive.  Alexis-Clair Roehrichposted wins in both the diving events, finishing with scores of 239.39 off the 1-meter board and 239.63 off the 3-meter board.  Jenika Parson was second in both events, finishing two points back in the 3-meter dive with a score of 245.60, and 214.34 in the 1-meter. Greylin Neilsenwas third in 1-meter (184.20) and fourth in 3-meter (194.30), and Karen Fryefield took fourth in 1-meter (177.61) and fifth in 3-meter (185.90).

Victoria Wu took home top honors in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:39.63), a new personal best by nearly five seconds, and senior Lily Seidman repeated the feat in the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.07)., setting a new mark this season by 1.57 seconds.

Smith took second in both relay races; Seidman was joined by Lenora WalterAriel Orr, andLauren Kauffman to finish just 1.34 seconds out of first in the 200 yard medley relay, and in the 400 freestyle relay, Kauffman and Seidman teamed up with Bradley and Emma Reim for a race that was decided by a mere .64 seconds.

The Pioneers also received second place finishes from Walter in the 200 yard individual medley, in 2:25.18, and the 200 backstroke, in 2:19.75 – her time in the 200 IM was a new season best by six seconds.  Walter made it a trio of second place finishes with a 1:04.11 showing in the 100 yard backstroke.  Ariel Orr also finished second in the 100 yard breaststroke in a season best 1:13.91, and Reim rounded out the second place finishers with a 2:04.25 finish in the 200 yard freestyle.

In all, four swimmers set personal bests in six events for the Pioneers, who will finish up the regular season with a return to Mt. Holyoke for the NEWMAC Championships, held from February 18-20.
